His dominating season convinced the AL to name New York (A)'s right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1957. Opposing players hit .228 against Ewell this season. While posting an ERA of 3.10 he went 29-7 in 40 starts, fanning 233 and walking 91 hitters. Ewell has pitched 3 shutouts and 23 complete games. He's 2nd in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! Blackwell wins the award for the 5th time in his 12-year career. Awards may not be the most important thing for Frank Smith, but Cincinnati's right-hander smiled as he was named the NL Cy Young Award winner. Tuesday 10/3/1957: Mays and Mathews win Most Valuable Player Award Boston's centerfielder Willie Mays will never forget this day. A great season convinced the voters that he is the worthy AL Most Valuable Player Award winner. Mays has hit for a .358 average this season. He has 90 extra base hits along with 375 total bases, resulting in a .710 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Philadelphia (N)'s third baseman Eddie Mathews had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The NL shared this opinion and names the 25 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! His season numbers are: .311 AVG, 173 hits, 33 doubles, 2 triples and 55 homeruns, along with 133 RBI and 125 runs scored. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Mathews wins the award for the 2nd time in his 5-year career. |
Tuesday 10/3/1957: Chicago (N)'s Robinson named Rookie Of The Year Award Pete Whisenant will never forget his first full season. The AL was convinced that Cleveland's leftfielder, 27 years old, should be the Rookie Of The Year Award winner of 1957. His season features a batting average of .276 (144 hits in 522 AB), 20 doubles, 4 triples and 31 homeruns. Whisenant collected 91 RBI and 100 runs as well. The 1957 NL Rookie Of The Year Award winner is from Chicago (N) this season. Frank Robinson put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 22 year old ballplayer. Robinson has walked 66 times this year and posts a .377 OBP. While batting .290, 169 for 583, he has driven in 117 runs. Sunday 10/1/1957: Johnson and Smith receive Pitcher of the Month award Ken Johnson couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the AL thought so as well, naming the left-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 26 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 26 innings. His ERA in September was 2.51. Ken pitched a shutout as well. In 36 starts this year Ken struck out 189 batters in 289 innings of work. His ERA is 4.27, his record 17-12. He has 16 complete games and 3 shutouts. Friday 9/22/1957: Dick Kokos (BOS) will miss 4 weeks BOSTON - Boston's players were scared when they had to watch Dick Kokos suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Washington. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Kokos will probaby miss 4 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Ribs. Kokos has hit for a .302 average this season. He has 38 extra base hits along with 149 total bases, resulting in a .556 slugging percentage. |
Wednesday 9/20/1957: Bob Cain dominates Detroit, gives up just 2 hits WASHINGTON - Bob Cain had his best stuff going, and Detroit hitters had nothing to cheer about. Washington's southpaw pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Cain (8-5) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 105 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' The hitting star for Washington was rightfielder Bob Nieman, he went 2 for 4, hitting a homerun. Washington improved its record to 69-81, scoring 3 runs on 8 hits. |
Monday 9/18/1957: Boston's Noren wins Player of the Week award The AL Player of the Week award goes to Irv Noren, Boston's starting first baseman. Noren helped his team with an average of .520 and 5 RBI in 25 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Brooklyn's Duke Snider this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Sunday 9/17/1957: Alvin Dark drills 5 hits BALTIMORE - Baltimore's shortstop Alvin Dark once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Chicago (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. In the 3rd inning he belted a RBI double off Dick Donovan. A pitch from Dick Donovan in the 5th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 399 feet from home plate in left-center. A pitch from Lloyd Hittle in the 8th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He had singles in the 2nd inning and in the 7th . Alvin scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 168 hits in 542 at bats, resulting in a .310 batting average. Baltimore scored 14 runs on 17 hits. |
Friday 9/15/1957: Boston's Irv Noren ropes six hits KANSAS CITY - Irv Noren saw the ball really well, leading Boston to a 11-5 win over Kansas City. His six hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Irv seemed happy as well after the game. A pitch from Bud Daley in the 5th inning left his bat for a double. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 2nd , in the 4th inning , in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning . Irv scored 3 runs. He didn't collect any RBIs, though. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 184 hits in 511 at bats, resulting in a .360 batting average. |

Thursday 9/7/1957: Warren Spahn blanks Kansas City with a 2-hitter KANSAS CITY - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Warren Spahn did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Kansas City. Spahn (17-13) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Irv Noren helped Spahn at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting two dingers, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0. |
Monday 9/4/1957: Peterson (BAL) and Mueller (NYN) win P.O.W. award The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Baltimore's Hardy Peterson this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hardy was on fire, hitting .435 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. The NL's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Don Mueller, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Friday 9/1/1957: Johnson (NYY) and Smith (CIN) win monthly pitcher award It's the 3rd time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Ernie Johnson. His ERA of just 2.07 helped him to a 6-0 record in August. He worked 61 innings, striking out 31 hitters while walking 12. Ernie pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .240 against Ernie this season. While posting an ERA of 2.90 he went 18-5 in 33 starts, fanning 149 and walking 71 hitters. He has 9 complete games and one shutout. Monday 8/21/1957: Ray Boone punishes Washington with five hits CLEVELAND - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Cleveland's shortstop Ray Boone after the 14-13 win over Washington. A 423 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Bob Cain in the 5th inning. A two-run double off Bob Cain in the 6th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Mike Fornieles in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 438 feet from home plate in center field. He had singles in the 3rd inning and in the 9th . Ray did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .291. |

Sunday 8/20/1957: Kansas City's Kaline out for 5 weeks KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, centerfielder Al Kaline, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. Pulled Achilles Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .275 (123 hits in 448 AB), 29 doubles, 2 triples and 11 taters. Kaline collected 63 RBI and 67 runs as well. |
Wednesday 8/16/1957: Del Ennis stars with 2000th career hit BOSTON - Boston's leftfielder Del Ennis already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Del collected 273 homeruns and 1110 RBI in 11 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' With two outs in the 9th inning, Del drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. |

Sunday 8/13/1957: Russ Meyer fires 1-hitter against New York (N) NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Pittsburgh's Russ Meyer didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. Meyer (6-11) struck out 1 and issued 3 BB, throwing 57 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Pittsburgh's shortstop George Strickland finished 2 for 4, hitting a double, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Meyer. Tuesday 8/8/1957: Larry Doby pounds three dingers NEW YORK (A) - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. New York (A)'s rightfielder Larry Doby accomplished that feat in a 12-2 win over Kansas City. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Curt Barclay in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in right field. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Curt Barclay. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 384 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Larry finished 4 for 4, doubling once, scoring three runs and driving in 9 runs. His homerun total this year is 21, along with 79 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! New York (A) improved its record to 72-41, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits. |
Monday 8/7/1957: Milwaukee's Skinner wins Player of the Week award New York (A)'s catcher Elston Howard had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Howard helped his team with an average of .571 and 8 RBI in 21 at bats. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Bob Skinner, Milwaukee's starting leftfielder. He hit .476 with 10 RBI and slugged .952 in 21 at bats. Bob is hitting .278 this year, with 109 hits in 392 at bats. He has driven in 51 runs, slugging .426. |
Sunday 8/6/1957: Warren Spahn dominates Detroit, gives up just one hit BOSTON - Detroit's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Boston's Warren Spahn didn't help them. The lefty fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Joe Ginsberg singled with one out in the 5th inning. Spahn (13-9) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Willie Mays provided Boston with the offense Spahn needed as he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, with three runs scored and driving in 4 runs. Tuesday 8/1/1957: Koufax and Face receive Pitcher of the Month award It's the 2nd time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Sandy Koufax. He went 6-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 1.50. He struck out 42 in 54 innings. Sandy also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .231 against Sandy this season. While posting an ERA of 3.83 he went 19-7 in 27 starts, fanning 195 and walking 97 hitters. He has 13 complete games and one shutout. He's 5th in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins! The best month of July in the NL certainly had Cincinnati's right-hander Roy Face, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He started 8 games in July, going 6-2 and compiling an ERA of 3.34 in 64.2 innings. Roy fanned 39 hitters. Roy has a record of 20-6 this season, with an ERA of 4.03. Tuesday 7/18/1957: Carl Sawatski (BOS) will miss 5-6 weeks BOSTON - Boston's catcher Carl Sawatski will miss at least 5-6 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Ulna which will require surgery. This year Sawatski drove in 45 and scored 36 runs while batting .249 with 10 homeruns. |
Tuesday 7/18/1957: Sandy Koufax quiets Kansas City bats with shutout NEW YORK (A) - It was a great day for New York (A)'s southpaw Sandy Koufax. The 21-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Kansas City on Tuesday. Koufax (16-7) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 119 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' The hitting star for New York (A) was shortstop Gil Mcdougald, he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting 2 doubles, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. Sunday 7/2/1957: Season ending injury strikes Washington's Johnson WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Connie Johnson experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Chicago (A), Johnson complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. That definitely helped Philadelphia (N), they won the game 9 to 7. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 442 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. Wednesday 6/21/1957: Frank Smith pitches his 4th shutout of the season CINCINNATI - Frank Smith took the mound and never left. And Philadelphia (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Cincinnati's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 102 games started. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Smith (14-3) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 108 pitches for strikes. Sunday 5/28/1957: Kansas City's Red Schoendienst gets milestone hit KANSAS CITY - Red Schoendienst got a standing ovation from 21163 fans in Kansas City, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Red collected 71 homeruns and 687 RBI in 12 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' Wednesday 5/24/1957: Hank Edwards stars with 2000th career hit CLEVELAND - Detroit's rightfielder Hank Edwards was in good mood after the game against Cleveland, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. Friday 5/19/1957: Pittsburgh's Willie Mays goes deep three times BROOKLYN - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Pittsburgh's centerfielder Willie Mays accomplished that feat in a 14-2 win over Brooklyn. In the 1st inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Ralph Branca. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Ralph Branca in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 438 feet from home plate. Saturday 5/13/1957: Brooklyn's Hal Newhouser wins #300 PITTSBURGH - Brooklyn's left-hander Hal Newhouser gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Newhouser allowed 7 earned runs while striking out 6 and walking 2 in 8.2 innings of work. His career features a 3.48 ERA, along with 4025 K's in 4815 innings. He has won 20 games 6 times in his career, setting a career high with 29 wins in 1944. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it. |
