The right-hander was named the Cy Young Award winner in the AL today. This season Blackwell compiled an ERA of 3.24, going 20-9 in 39 starts. He fanned 218 while giving up 282 hits in 322 innings. He has 13 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins! Blackwell wins the award for the 3rd time in his 10-year career. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. His season features a batting average of .301 (162 hits in 538 AB), 25 doubles, 3 triples and 43 taters. Mantle collected 116 RBI and 144 runs as well. He's 4th in the AL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! The NL Most Valuable Player Award goes to Norm Zauchin this year. Monday 10/2/1955: Kansas City's Daley earns Rookie Of The Year Award Kansas City's Bud Daley was almost in tears when he heard the news. The 22 year old pitcher was named the Rookie Of The Year Award winner in the AL today. What a way to begin a career! Opposing players hit .267 against Bud this season. While posting an ERA of 3.97 he went 18-13 in 31 starts, fanning 122 and walking 108 hitters. He has 14 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 5th in the AL in wins! Sunday 10/1/1955: Weik and Pierce receive Pitcher of the Month award Washington's pitcher Dick Weik is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. His ERA of just 1.73 helped him to a 3-1 record in September. He worked 36.1 innings, striking out 28 hitters while walking 25. This season Weik compiled an ERA of 4.44, going 13-10 in 32 starts. He fanned 154 while giving up 170 hits in 208.2 innings. The best month of September in the NL certainly had Philadelphia (N)'s southpaw Billy Pierce, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. Saturday 9/23/1955: Washington's Yost out for 7-8 weeks WASHINGTON - Washington's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, third baseman Eddie Yost, injured himself while rounding a base. Friday 9/22/1955: Paul Foytack fires 1-hitter against Baltimore BALTIMORE - It was a great day for New York (A)'s right-hander Paul Foytack. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Baltimore on Friday. Roy Sievers spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 8th inning. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Foytack (1-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. Stan Musial provided New York (A) with the offense Foytack needed as he got 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 3-0. |
Thursday 9/21/1955: Brooklyn's Duke Snider mashes six hits CINCINNATI - On Thursday, Brooklyn's centerfielder Duke Snider displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Cincinnati, punishing their pitchers with six hits. A 385 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Roy Face in the 1st inning. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Roy Face in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Roy Face. His 5th hit was a double off Dave Ferriss in the 7th inning. He had singles in the 5th inning and in the 8th inning (two RBIs). Duke scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .294 this season, with 43 HR and 117 RBI. The final score of the game was 16-6. |

He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Elmer Valo in a game against Detroit. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Monday 8/21/1955: Jim Delsing drills 5 hits NEW YORK (A) - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Jim Delsing after his 5 hit game, which New York (A) won 19-2 against Chicago (A). In the 1st inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Eddie Erautt. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 391 feet, cleared the wall in left field. A pitch from Lew Burdette in the 4th inning left his bat for a double. A pitch from Hal Gregg in the 7th inning left his bat for a three-run double. He had a single in the 6th. Jim scored 4 runs, and he collected 8 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .382. |

Cincinnati's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 32 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Smith (12-13) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. The hitting star for Cincinnati was centerfielder Hank Edwards, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. Cincinnati scored 5 runs on 6 hits. |

Saturday 7/8/1955: Del Ennis on fire, hits for cycle BOSTON - Boston's leftfielder Del Ennis once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. A single in the 3rd off George O'donnell accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a RBI triple off George O'donnell in the 7th inning. It tied the ballgame at 5. In the 9th inning he belted a double off Barney Schultz. His 4th hit, off Luis Aloma in the 11th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. His final hit of the game capped his performance as it won the game, setting the crowd on fire! That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Del did drive in 2 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 119 hits this season, accounting for a .349 batting average. He becomes the 11th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Dale Mitchell was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/14/1954. |
Wednesday 7/5/1955: Jim Piersall on fire, crushes three PITTSBURGH - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Pittsburgh's centerfielder Jim Piersall accomplished that feat in a 12-8 win over Milwaukee. His 1st blast, a three-run homerun off Johnny Antonelli in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 412 feet from home plate. A 363 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Johnny Antonelli in the 4th inning. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Herb Score in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left field. Jim stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times with 6 RBI. In 1419 career at bats, he has hit 42 homeruns and collected 228 RBI. On 9/10/1954, Mickey Mantle was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. |
Wednesday 7/5/1955: Detroit's Elmer Valo gets milestone hit BALTIMORE - Detroit's Elmer Valo showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Baltimore on Wednesday. With one out in the 5th inning, Elmer drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Elmer collected 95 homeruns and 949 RBI in 13 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' |

Saturday 6/24/1955: Cleveland's Mickey Vernon laces 2000th career hit CLEVELAND - Cleveland's first baseman Mickey Vernon already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. In 14 years of big league action so far, Mickey has compiled a batting average of .296, along with 144 homeruns and 1099 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' He hit a single in the 2nd off Howie Pollet for number 2000. |
Friday 6/23/1955: Duane Pillette pitches 2-hit shutout against Boston CLEVELAND - Boston's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Cleveland's Duane Pillette didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Pillette (6-3) fanned 3 and walked 2, throwing 91 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. Sunday 6/11/1955: Sandy Koufax out for 7 weeks NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s ace Sandy Koufax will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 4th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .263 against Sandy this season. While posting an ERA of 3.81 he went 6-1 in 10 starts, fanning 61 and walking 37 hitters. |

He had an on base percentage of .692 and hit .636, while driving in 8 runs. Dusty Rhodes wins his 1st Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Saturday 6/3/1955: Chicago (A)'s Byerly severely injured CHICAGO (A) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (A)'s right-hander Bud Byerly will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Detroit where he left the field in the 1st inning. Chicago (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Byerly had suffered a Bone Chips Elbow. His ERA of 3.29 helped him to a 7-4 record this year. He struck out 54 and walked 27 in 106.2 innings. He's 9th in the AL in ERA and 4th in wins! |
Friday 6/2/1955: Ralph Branca fires 2-hitter against Chicago (N) BROOKLYN - Ralph Branca took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Brooklyn's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 366 games started. Branca (6-5) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 123 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Thursday 6/1/1955: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced It's the 1st time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Sandy Koufax. His record of 5-1 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 58 innings of work he allowed just 56 hits while striking out 44, compiling an ERA of just 3.72. This season Koufax compiled an ERA of 3.72, going 5-1 in 7 starts. He fanned 44 while giving up 56 hits in 58 innings. Thursday 6/1/1955: Cincinnati's Edwards named Batter of the Month Baltimore's third baseman Roy Sievers had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. Roy was on fire, hitting .376 with 12 homeruns and 39 RBI. His season features a batting average of .306 (55 hits in 180 AB), 7 doubles, no triples and 18 homeruns. Sievers collected 65 RBI and 40 runs as well. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Cincinnati's rightfielder Hank Edwards had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Batter of the Month. Hank went 34 for 81 (.420), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 21 RBI. Tuesday 5/30/1955: Kansas City's Wally Moon has great day with six hits CHICAGO (A) - 'Wow, six hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Kansas City's leftfielder Wally Moon after the 15-6 win over Chicago (A). A triple off Bud Byerly in the 2nd inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 6th (one RBI) , in the 7th and in the 9th . Wally did drive in 2 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 66 hits in 193 at bats, resulting in a .342 batting average. |

Friday 5/19/1955: Gil Hodges (BRO) will miss 5-6 weeks BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Gil Hodges, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5-6 weeks. Hodges was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. St. Louis (N)'s catcher Joe Garagiola had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. He hit .435 with 9 RBI and slugged .739 in 23 at bats. Saturday 5/13/1955: Hal Newhouser turns in great performance against Baltimore BALTIMORE - Hal Newhouser took the mound and never left. And Baltimore hitters couldn't touch him at all. Detroit's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 46 career shutouts in 535 games started. Newhouser (7-3) struck out 5 and issued 3 BB, throwing 73 of 127 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. Tuesday 4/11/1955: St. Louis (N)'s Danny Gardella laces five hits ST. LOUIS (N) - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Danny Gardella after the 12-6 win over New York (N). A 359 foot drive to right field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Andy Hansen in the 1st inning. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Tom Gorman in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left field. He had singles in the 3rd inning , in the 6th inning and in the 7th (one RBI). Danny scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .333. |
Tuesday 4/11/1955: Ted Williams unloads, hits number 500 CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s centerfielder Ted Williams already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one, unloading for his 500th career homerun. Along with his 500 homeruns, Ted collected 2258 hits and 1650 RBI in 13 seasons. Ted hit 30+ homeruns in a season 12 times, hitting 40 bombs 4 times. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' A pitch from Monte Kennedy in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 392 feet from home plate in right-center. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! |
