Wednesday 10/4/1950: Overmire (SLA) and Antonelli (BSN) win Best Pitcher Award The AL Best Pitcher Award winner was announced today, with St. Louis (A)'s southpaw Stubby Overmire taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. Stubby has a record of 23-11 this season, with an ERA of 3.59. In 318.1 Innings he was able to strike out 79 batters. Wednesday 10/4/1950: Williams and Snider earn Best Hitter Award honors The Best Hitter Award in the AL was handed to Boston (A)'s leftfielder Ted Williams! Sunday 9/17/1950: Chuck Stobbs (BOS) will miss 8-9 weeks BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s ace Chuck Stobbs suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Detroit he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Stobbs was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. He powered Cleveland to a 6-5 win over Philadelphia (A) by homering three times. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Lou Brissie in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left field. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. Number 2 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 425 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. A pitch from Lou Brissie in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 390 feet from home plate in left-center. Monday 8/7/1950: Lou Boudreau has 2000th career hits DETROIT - Cleveland's shortstop Lou Boudreau already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Thursday 6/29/1950: Andy Pafko uncorks cycle hits against Brooklyn BROOKLYN - Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Andy Pafko once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Brooklyn's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Thursday. His 1st hit was a RBI double off Preacher Roe in the 1st inning. A single in the 3rd off Preacher Roe accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Preacher Roe in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 360 feet from home plate. Hit number 4 followed in the 7th inning, a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Andy scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .311. He becomes the 2nd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Monday 6/26/1950: Kell and Borowy win Player of the Week award The AL's best player of the week was Detroit's George Kell, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. While posting an ERA of 3.63 he went 9-2 in 15 starts, fanning 78 and walking 48 hitters. Hal has pitched one shutout and 7 complete games. He's 8th in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins! Dick Donovan couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 4-2 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 54.2 innings of work he allowed just 56 hits while striking out 15, compiling an ERA of just 2.80. New York (A) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the lefty. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Friday 5/26/1950: New York (A)'s Luke Appling laces 3000th career hit DETROIT - New York (A)'s shortstop Luke Appling joined some elite company today, collecting his 3000th career hit! In 19 years of big league action so far, Luke has compiled a batting average of .311, along with 58 homeruns and 1244 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a single in the 3rd off Art Houtteman for number 3000. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! |
Wednesday 5/24/1950: Philadelphia (A)'s Wyse out for 8 weeks PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s ace Hank Wyse suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Chicago (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Wyse was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Wednesday 5/3/1950: Detroit's Don Kolloway hits for the cycle DETROIT - Don Kolloway led Detroit to a 14-4 win over Chicago (A) by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A RBI triple off Bob Kuzava in the 3rd inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A 363 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Ken Holcombe in the 6th inning. A single in the 7th off Bill Wight accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit was a two-run double off Bob Cain in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Don did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own.
