Sunday 10/22/1928: Comstock (PHA) and Williams (BRO) win Most Valuable Pitcher
All the hard work finally paid off for Philadelphia (A)'s Ralph Comstock. The right-hander was named the Most Valuable Pitcher winner in the American League today. His ERA of 3.18 helped him to a 26-9 record this year. He struck out 152 and walked 43 in 322.1 innings. Ralph has pitched one shutout and 28 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The 1928 National League Most Valuable Pitcher winner is from Brooklyn this year. Sunday 10/22/1928: Collins and Gehrig earn Most Valuable Hitter honors
The American League Most Valuable Hitter goes to Pat Collins this year. He had an extraordinary season! Pat is hitting .338 this year, with 162 hits in 480 at bats. He has driven in 132 runs, slugging .669. He's 10th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Collins wins the award for the 2nd time in his 8-year career. The National League Most Valuable Hitter goes to Lou Gehrig this year. He had an extraordinary season as well! Sunday 10/22/1928: English (PHA) and Klein (STL) win Rookie Of The Year
Woody English was named the American League Rookie Of The Year winner today. Philadelphia (A)'s second baseman put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 22 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! His season features a batting average of .318 (154 hits in 485 AB), 43 doubles, 6 triples and 4 taters. English collected 72 RBI and 110 runs as well. Chuck Klein was named the National League Rookie Of The Year winner today. St. Louis (N)'s rightfielder put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 24 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! Klein has hit 33 bombs this year while batting .316. He adds 37 doubles, along with 109 runs scored. He's 6th in the National League in RBIs and 8th in homeruns!
 
Monday 10/2/1928: Cincinnati's Sewell wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's shortstop Mark Koenig. He had an on base percentage of .444 and hit .480, while driving in 6 runs. Joe Sewell from Cincinnati wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Joe pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 2 HR and 11 RBI while slugging .885. Joe managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Sunday 10/1/1928: St. Louis (N)'s Grove severely injured
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s lefty Lefty Grove suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. In 40 starts this year Lefty struck out 219 batters in 330 innings of work. His ERA is 3.71, his record 22-13. He has 29 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 6th in the National League in ERA and 5th in wins!
 
Sunday 10/1/1928: Ernie Nevers quiets Boston (A) bats with shutout
BOSTON (A) - It was a great day for Detroit's right-hander Ernie Nevers. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Boston (A) on Sunday. Nevers (6-1) fanned 2 and walked 3, throwing 104 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' The hitting star for Detroit was shortstop Mark Koenig, he went 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.

It's the 3rd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Detroit's pitcher Vic Keen. He started 5 games in September, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 2.20 in 45 innings. CHICAGO (N) - John Beckwith was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Pittsburgh to a 11-5 win over Chicago (N) by homering three times. His 1st shot, off William A 416 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off William His 3rd blast, a two-run homerun off Bill Overall he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 5 RBI.
 
Saturday 9/30/1928: Philadelphia (N)'s Oscar Charleston hits for the cycle
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Oscar Charleston hits 'em where they ain't. Boston (N) certainly agrees as Philadelphia (N)'s first baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A pitch from Lawrence His 2nd hit was a two-run double off Tom Glass in the 3rd inning. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run triple off Jim Roberts. A single in the 6th off George Ellison accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Oscar scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! Saturday 9/30/1928: Austin Mchenry ropes 2000th career hit
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's leftfielder Austin Mchenry joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! He hit a single in the 4th off Virgil Barnes for number 2000. Along with his 2000 hits, Austin collected 174 homeruns and 1219 RBI in 11 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'

ST. LOUIS (N) - Great days are rare. But not for St. Louis (N)'s left-hander Lefty Grove. Boston (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Grove (21-13) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 119 pitches. The hitting star for St. Louis (N) was St. Louis (N) improved its record to 61-91, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
 
Monday 9/18/1928: Mcnamara and Klein win Player of the Week award
Tim Mcnamara of Washington wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 4.30 helped him to a 17-18 record this year. He struck out 121 and walked 54 in 326.1 innings. He has 28 complete games and 2 shutouts. BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s players had every reason to congratulate George Harper, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, George collected 140 homeruns and 1024 RBI in 12 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' He hit a single in the 7th off Speed Martin for number 2000.
 
Thursday 9/14/1928: Philadelphia (A)'s Stearnes out for 5 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes hurt himself in the 9th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Norman Stearnes will miss at least 5 weeks. Philadelphia (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Stearnes had suffered a Broken Finger. His season features a batting average of .356 (202 hits in 568 AB), 47 doubles, 9 triples and 25 homeruns. Stearnes collected 119 RBI and 126 runs as well. CLEVELAND - St. Louis (A)'s rightfielder Ross Youngs was in good mood after the game against Cleveland, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. He hit a double in the 3rd off Freddie Fitzsimmons for number 2000. In 11 years of big league action so far, Ross has compiled a batting average of .317, along with 56 homeruns and 832 RBI. NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s second baseman Earl Webb hurt himself in the 10th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Earl Webb will miss at least 4-5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Earl is hitting .311 this year, with 145 hits in 466 at bats. He has driven in 86 runs, slugging .498.
 
Monday 9/4/1928: Boston (N)'s Gehringer wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's rightfielder Lefty O'doul had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .531 and hit .500, while driving in 7 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 11 game hitting streak right now. PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s centerfielder James Bell will miss about 4 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 3rd inning of the game between Philadelphia (N) and St. Louis (N). He dove for a drive off the bat of Pete Scott, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Finger. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Bell drove in 62 and scored 103 runs while batting .344 with 12 longballs. He's 5th in the National League in batting!

It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Lefty Stewart. Monday 8/28/1928: Ray Blades on fire, laces five hits
ST. LOUIS (N) - Ray Blades punished St. Louis (N)'s pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Boston (N), they won the game 7 to 4. A pitch from Harry Hulihan in the 1st inning left his bat for a triple. A double off Harry Hulihan in the 3rd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Harry Hulihan. A pitch from Lucas Boada in the 9th inning left his bat for a double. He collected a single in the 7th. Ray didn't drive in anybody, but he scored 4 runs. Tuesday 8/15/1928: Clarence Smith stars with cycle against Pittsburgh
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s first baseman Clarence A single in the 1st off Jesse Winters accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 376 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a triple off Jesse Winters. His 4th hit, off Jesse Winters in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. A double off Jesse Winters in the 8th inning accounted for his 5th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Clarence He's having a very good season so far, batting .423. He becomes the 22nd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 4/28/1928, Charles Smith was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Monday 8/14/1928: Clay Roe fires NO-NO against Chicago (N)
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s left-hander Clay Roe is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Chicago (N) on no hits. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Roe (18-7) was really unbelievable, striking out 16 and walking 4, throwing 82 of 145 pitches for strikes. Wilson Redus provided Philadelphia (N) with the offense Roe needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting two dingers, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs. Philadelphia (N) improved its record to 66-51, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
 
Monday 8/14/1928: Koenig and Gehrig win Player of the Week award
Mark Koenig wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Mark pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .481 with 1 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .667. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Saturday 8/12/1928: Sam Gibson blanks Chicago (N) with a 2-hitter
BOSTON (N) - Chicago (N)'s hitters were dominated by Boston (N)'s Sam Gibson. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 3rd shutout of the season. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Gibson (9-12) struck out 1 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 112 pitches for strikes. Ed Chaplin provided Boston (N) with the offense Gibson needed as he finished with 1 hit in 2 AB. Boston (N) scored 1 run on 3 hits.
 
Tuesday 8/8/1928: Lou Gehrig found the stroke, smashes three homers
PITTSBURGH - Lou Gehrig was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Boston (N) to a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh by homering three times. A 402 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Tony Kaufmann in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Tony Kaufmann in the 9th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 356 feet from home plate in right field. It tied the ballgame at 3. Thursday 8/3/1928: John Beckwith collects 2000th hit against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Pittsburgh's third baseman John Beckwith already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, John collected 270 homeruns and 1247 RBI in 11 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' He hit a two run homerun in the 5th off Bill Holland for number 2000.
 
Wednesday 8/2/1928: Ed Wells shuts out St. Louis (N) on 2 hits
BOSTON (N) - St. Louis (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Boston (N)'s Ed Wells didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Wells (12-12) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 105 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Boston (N)'s catcher Ed Chaplin finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, scoring twice with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wells. Monday 7/10/1928: Clay Roe pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s southpaw Clay Roe is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Roe 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 7th shutouts in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. The American League Player of the Week award goes to Hack Wilson, Boston (A)'s starting leftfielder. Wilson helped his team with an average of .480 and 6 RBI in 25 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's John Beckwith, who wins the award for the 16th time in his career. NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher William Ewing, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Foot. Surgery will be performed next week. His season features a batting average of .313 (79 hits in 252 AB), 27 doubles, one triple and 4 homeruns. Ewing collected 44 RBI and 35 runs as well.
 
Monday 6/26/1928: Pittsburgh's Dihigo wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to George Carr, Philadelphia (A)'s starting shortstop. Carr helped his team with an average of .483 and 9 RBI in 29 at bats. Sunday 6/25/1928: Pea ridge Day fires 1-hitter against Chicago (A)
WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Pea ridge Day will never forget this day. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Chicago (A) on Sunday. With two outs in the 9th inning Kiki Cuyler tripled to break up the no-hitter. Day (5-2) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 71 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' John Peters provided Washington with the offense Day needed as he got 0 hit in 2 AB. Washington scored 1 run on 3 hits.
 
Saturday 6/24/1928: Martin Dihigo pounds three dingers
ST. LOUIS (N) - Pittsburgh beat St. Louis (N) 9-7, but that was not the real story of the game. Martin Dihigo was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Neal Baker in the 3rd inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 421 feet from home plate in left-center. A 410 foot drive to left-center marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Neal Baker in the 5th inning. Number 3 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 351 feet, cleared the wall in right field. CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s second baseman Cristobal Torriente suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. Monday 6/19/1928: Brooklyn's Carson Bigbee gets milestone hit
PITTSBURGH - Brooklyn's centerfielder Carson Bigbee joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Carson collected 51 homeruns and 715 RBI in 12 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' His hit in the 5th inning was a two run homerun off Jesse Winters.

CINCINNATI - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Dutch Leonard did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Chicago (N). 'Hey, that's my job! ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s ace Clarence Winters suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Winters was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Elbow Ligament. Clarence has a record of 5-4 this season, with an ERA of 4.13. In 102.1 Innings he was able to strike out 46 batters. Saturday 5/13/1928: Detroit's Cronin out for the season
DETROIT - Detroit's shortstop Joe Cronin suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. He collapsed in pain after the throw and was helped off the field. Cronin was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. Joe has gone 26 for 81 (.321) this season, hitting 2 homeruns and driving in 10 runs. He has scored 16 runs on his own.
 
Monday 5/8/1928: Gillenwater (BOS) and Scales (PHI) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston (A)'s pitcher Claral Gillenwater. Claral went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50, while fanning 8 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. George Scales from Philadelphia (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. George went 12 for 23 (.522), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 12 RBI.
 
Friday 5/5/1928: Jesse Winters shuts out St. Louis (N) on one hit
ST. LOUIS (N) - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Jesse Winters did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against St. Louis (N). Winters (3-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 3, throwing 118 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' John Beckwith helped Winters at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. Pittsburgh improved its record to 17-13, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.
 
Monday 5/1/1928: Detroit's Root out for 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Charley Root suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Elbow. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .271 against Charley this season. While posting an ERA of 4.87 he went 5-2 in 8 starts, fanning 23 and walking 15 hitters. Charley has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in wins!
 
Monday 5/1/1928: Barnes (DET) and Grove (STL) win monthly pitcher award
Jesse Barnes pitched like a legend in April, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 6-1 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 62 innings of work he allowed just 60 hits while striking out 23, compiling an ERA of just 3.05. Jesse also fired a shutout. Lefty Grove couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the National League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. He went 6-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 2.04. He struck out 39 in 53 innings. Lefty fired two shutouts!
 
Monday 5/1/1928: Washington's Goslin earns Batter of the Month award
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Washington's Goose Goslin this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Goose was on fire, hitting .469 with 3 homeruns and 26 RBI. It's the 9th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Charles Smith. Smith helped his team with an average of .500 and 46 RBI in 104 at bats.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jesse Barnes, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. Barnes was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00. Along the way he struck out 8 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Charles Smith this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .500 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.444 in 18 at bats. Charles is hitting .500 this year, with 52 hits in 104 at bats. He has driven in 46 runs, slugging 1.154. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Sunday 4/30/1928: Chicago (N)'s Charles Smith clears fence three times
CHICAGO (N) - Charles Smith powered Chicago (N) to a 6-5 win over New York (N). He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Jack A 377 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Jack His 3rd shot, a three-run homerun off Jack His final blast of the game capped his performance as it won the game, setting the crowd on fire! Charles finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 5 runs. On 7/11/1927, Wilson Redus was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
 
Friday 4/28/1928: Charles Smith punishes St. Louis (N) with four hits, cycle
ST. LOUIS (N) - Charles Smith is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 1st off Clarence Winters accounted for his 1st hit. In the 2nd inning he belted a two-run double off Clarence Winters. His 3rd hit was a triple off Bill Pertica in the 7th inning. Number 4 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 382 feet, cleared the wall in right field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Charles did drive in 3 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 49 hits in 99 at bats, resulting in a .495 batting average. He's now the 21st player in league history to hit for the cycle! Dick Lundy was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/7/1928.
 
Monday 4/24/1928: Player of the Week honors go to Goslin and Smith
Goose Goslin from Washington wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 23 at bats he hit .478 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Chicago (N)'s Charles Smith, who wins the award for the 14th time in his career. In 24 at bats he hit .583 with 7 HR and 16 RBI. Charles managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well!
 
Friday 4/21/1928: Jimmy Lyons uncorks six hits against Boston (N)
BOSTON (N) - Jimmy Lyons is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st cleared the based, a three-run double off Ed Wells in the 3rd inning. He had singles in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning (one RBI) , in the 7th , in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Jimmy scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 20 hits in 60 at bats, resulting in a .333 batting average. New York (N) improved its record to 7-13, scoring 22 runs on 25 hits.
 
Monday 4/17/1928: Cincinnati's Terry wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Norman Stearnes, Philadelphia (A)'s starting leftfielder. Norman pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .531 with 2 HR and 11 RBI while slugging .906. His season numbers are: .438 AVG, 28 hits, 10 doubles, one triple and 5 longballs, along with 19 RBI and 15 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Bill Terry from Cincinnati wins his 6th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .400 with 10 RBI and slugged .833 in 30 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now.
 
Wednesday 4/12/1928: Philadelphia (A)'s Norman Stearnes laces six hits
CLEVELAND - 'Wow, six hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes after the 15-11 win over Cleveland. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Ralph Judd in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 419 feet from home plate. A pitch from Jack Wisner in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. In the 12th inning he belted a double off Eddie Moore. He had singles in the 2nd (one RBI) , in the 4th (two RBIs) and in the 8th inning . Norman did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .438.
 
Tuesday 4/11/1928: Cleveland's Dan Kennard laces 2000th career hit
CLEVELAND - Dan Along with his 2000 hits, Dan 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 2nd inning was a single off Ralph Comstock.
 
Tuesday 4/11/1928: Season ending injury strikes New York (A)'s Dickey
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s catcher Bill Dickey suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Dickey laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Hip. Surgery will be performed next week.
 
Monday 4/10/1928: Carmen Hill (BOS) will miss 7 weeks
BOSTON (A) - When it rains, it pours. Boston (A)'s ace Carmen Hill will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis (A) where he left the field in the 6th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week.
 
Monday 4/10/1928: Player of the Week honors go to Foxx and Smith
New York (A)'s first baseman Jimmie Foxx had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jimmie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .433 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.033. Foxx has hit for a .421 average this season. He has 11 extra base hits along with 40 total bases, resulting in a 1.053 slugging percentage. He's 6th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! It's the 13th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Charles Smith. Charles pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .593 with 4 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.185. He has hit 5 homeruns while batting .529 this season. His 18 hits and 1 walks add up to a .528 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Friday 4/7/1928: Dick Lundy stars with cycle against Detroit
CLEVELAND - Dick Lundy is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. Tuesday 4/4/1928: Walt Kinney quiets Washington bats with shutout
WASHINGTON - Washington's offense is good, but Philadelphia (A)'s Walt Kinney was even better. The lefty fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Kinney (1-0) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 61 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, doubling three times, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Kinney. The final score of the game was 6-0.
