Monday 4/17/1904: Nops and Kelley win Player of the Week award Jerry Nops of St. Louis (A) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Nops was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 6 in 18 innings. He was able to complete both starts of the week. Chicago (N)'s first baseman Joe Kelley had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Kelley helped his team with an average of .458 and 6 RBI in 24 at bats. Kelley has hit for a .339 average this season. He has 7 extra base hits along with 30 total bases, resulting in a .536 slugging percentage. He's 10th in the National League in batting! |
Thursday 4/13/1904: Larry Mckeon earns 500th career win CINCINNATI - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Larry Mckeon already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 500th career win. Mckeon went 9 innings. He allowed 4 earned runs , giving up 5 hits while striking out 1 and walking 4 earned runs. His career features a 2.39 ERA, along with 5890 K's in 7371 innings. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' He set a career high with 32 wins in 1898. Mckeon won 20 or more games a season 17 times. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it. |
Tuesday 4/11/1904: Harry Felix shuts out Boston (A) on one hit WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Harry Felix will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Boston (A) on Tuesday. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Felix (2-1) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 93 pitches. Washington's rightfielder Homer Smoot stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Felix. The final score of the game was 3-0. |
Monday 4/10/1904: Pittsburgh's Chapman wins Player of the Week award St. Louis (A)'s third baseman John Mcgraw had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .538 and hit .455, while driving in 6 runs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Fred Chapman, one of Pittsburgh's best starting pitchers. Chapman was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! |
Saturday 4/8/1904: Noodles Hahn turns in great performance against Chicago (N) CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Brooklyn's Noodles Hahn didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Hahn (1-0) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 73 of 119 pitches for strikes. Heinie Peitz provided Brooklyn with the offense Hahn needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. Brooklyn scored 2 runs on 4 hits. |
Friday 4/7/1904: Jack Powell (NYG) will miss 8-9 weeks NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Jack Powell suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 8th of the game against St. Louis (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Elbow. |
Wednesday 4/5/1904: St. Louis (A)'s Matty Mcintyre has great day with five hits NEW YORK (A) - Matty Mcintyre led St. Louis (A) to a 9-7 win over New York (A) by squeezing five hits out of his bat. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Jack Taylor in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Jack Taylor in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 376 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 3rd , in the 5th and in the 6th inning (one RBI). Matty scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 7 hits in 19 at bats, resulting in a .368 batting average. |
