Wednesday 10/25/1888: Wyman and Davis receive Pitcher Of The Year
The American League Pitcher Of The Year winner was announced today, with Kansas City 's right-hander Frank Wyman taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. This season Wyman compiled an ERA of 2.52, going 24-14 in 41 starts. He fanned 142 while giving up 329 hits in 349.2 innings. He has 27 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Awards may not be the most important thing for Daisy Davis, but St. Louis (N)'s right-hander smiled as he was named the National League Pitcher Of The Year winner. This season Davis compiled an ERA of 2.71, going 30-14 in 45 starts. He fanned 216 while giving up 359 hits in 395 innings. He has 39 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 5th in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Wednesday 10/25/1888: Hitter Of The Year winners announced
It was a day to remember for Cleveland's Fred Dunlap, who won the American League Hitter Of The Year today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. This year Dunlap drove in 92 and scored 99 runs while batting .355 with 6 longballs. He's 2nd in the American League in batting and 2nd in RBI! It was a day to remember for Brooklyn's Dave Orr, who won the National League Hitter Of The Year today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. His season numbers are: .356 AVG, 208 hits, 54 doubles, 13 triples and 8 homeruns, along with 95 RBI and 102 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 7th in RBI! Orr wins the award for the 5th time in his 5-year career.
 
Wednesday 10/25/1888: Philadelphia (A)'s Sullivan earns Rookie Of The Year
Marty Sullivan was named the American League Rookie Of The Year winner today. Philadelphia (A)'s rightfielder put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 26 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! This year Sullivan drove in 87 and scored 72 runs while batting .272 with 7 longballs. He's 5th in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! The National League Rookie Of The Year winner was announced today as well, with Philadelphia (N)'s centerfielder Lefty Marr earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Lefty is hitting .300 this year, with 169 hits in 564 at bats. He has driven in 87 runs, slugging .426.
 
Sunday 10/15/1888: Bill Stemmeyer dominates Philadelphia (N), gives up just one hit
PHILADELPHIA (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Bill Stemmeyer is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia (N) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Stemmeyer (22-13) struck out 4 and issued 5 BB, throwing 78 of 124 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Bill Crowley helped Stemmeyer at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 3-0.
 
Monday 10/2/1888: New York (N)'s Ewing wins Player of the Week award
Kansas City 's pitcher Frank Wyman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Wyman was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 8 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Frank has a record of 24-14 this season, with an ERA of 2.54. In 340.1 Innings he was able to strike out 138 batters. Frank Wyman couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 1.92 in 61 innings of work in which he struck out 28 hitters. His record in September is 5-2. Frank got two complete game shutouts as well! Frank has a record of 24-14 this season, with an ERA of 2.54. In 340.1 Innings he was able to strike out 138 batters. Frank has pitched 2 shutouts and 27 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Ed Morris couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the National League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 21 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 21 innings. His ERA in September was 3.33. Opposing players hit .261 against Ed this season. While posting an ERA of 3.51 he went 20-18 in 39 starts, fanning 151 and walking 60 hitters. He's 7th in the National League in wins!

The American League's best player of the month was Louisville's Pete Browning, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 101 at bats he hit .396 with 2 HR and 12 RBI. Pete is hitting .334 this year, with 201 hits in 602 at bats. He has driven in 68 runs, slugging .468. He's 3rd in the American League in batting! Chippy Mcgarr of Chicago (N) wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Mcgarr helped his team with an average of .384 and 23 RBI in 99 at bats. His season features a batting average of .288 (165 hits in 573 AB), 28 doubles, 7 triples and 6 taters. Mcgarr collected 107 RBI and 86 runs as well.
 
Monday 9/25/1888: Shaw and Orr win Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's pitcher Dupee Shaw. Dupee went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Dave Orr, Brooklyn's starting first baseman. In 27 at bats he hit .593 with 0 HR and 5 RBI. Orr has hit for a .365 average this season. He has 74 extra base hits along with 302 total bases, resulting in a .549 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 8th in RBI!
 
Saturday 9/23/1888: Bobby Mathews out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A) is without its ace Bobby Mathews for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Stump Wiedman in a game against Indianapolis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 3.40 helped him to a 25-12 record this year. He struck out 121 and walked 37 in 323.1 innings. He has 33 complete games and one shutout. He's 1st in the American League in wins!
 
Monday 9/18/1888: Baltimore's Zimmer wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Chief Zimmer, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 18 at bats he hit .556 with 0 HR and 4 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .349, Chief hit .281 and slugged .402. He has collected 84 runs batted in this year. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Boston (N)'s Joe Hornung this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Joe was on fire, hitting .571 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. Hornung has walked 7 times this year and posts a .290 OBP. While batting .276, 121 for 438, he has driven in 41 runs.
 
Wednesday 9/13/1888: John Valentine pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis' right-hander John Valentine is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Washington on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. John Ward spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Valentine (13-12) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 53 of 79 pitches for strikes. Harry Wheeler helped Valentine at the plate, he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring two runs with 3 RBI. Indianapolis improved its record to 66-78, scoring 20 runs on 24 hits.
 
Monday 9/11/1888: New York (N)'s Shindle wins Player of the Week award
Indianapolis' pitcher Stump Wiedman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.65 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.68 helped him to a 14-13 record this year. He struck out 115 and walked 25 in 264 innings. He has 21 complete games and 2 shutouts. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s shortstop Billy Shindle. Billy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .647 with 0 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .941.
 
Monday 9/4/1888: Johnson (BAL) and Mccarthy (BSN) win P.O.W. award
Baltimore's centerfielder Bill Johnson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Bill went 12 for 27 (.444), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 7 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Tommy Mccarthy wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .481 with 7 RBI and slugged .741 in 27 at bats. His season numbers are: .333 AVG, 162 hits, 20 doubles, 11 triples and 3 homeruns, along with 80 RBI and 90 runs scored. He's 5th in the National League in batting and 7th in RBI!
 
Friday 9/1/1888: Al Mays (CIN) will miss 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Al Mays for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ernie Burch in a game against Philadelphia (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Mays was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Mays compiled an ERA of 3.33, going 11-15 in 31 starts. He fanned 103 while giving up 221 hits in 230 innings. Al has pitched one shutout and 9 complete games.
 
Friday 9/1/1888: Dugan and Ramsey receive Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Detroit's Ed Dugan. His record of 5-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 62 innings of work he allowed just 34 hits while striking out 29, compiling an ERA of just 1.02. Ed also fired a shutout. In 36 starts this year Ed struck out 149 batters in 307 innings of work. His ERA is 3.20, his record 18-11. He has 27 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 6th in the American League in wins! Toad Ramsey pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 30 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 30 innings. His ERA in August was 1.73. Toad pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.51 helped him to a 22-6 record this year. He struck out 172 and walked 78 in 279.1 innings. Toad has pitched 4 shutouts and 15 complete games. Bernie Graham of Baltimore wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. Graham helped his team with an average of .366 and 25 RBI in 101 at bats. This year Graham drove in 67 and scored 49 runs while batting .278 with 4 bombs. The National League's best player of the month was Chicago (N)'s Ed Swartwood, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .489 and hit .438, while driving in 10 runs. Swartwood has hit 3 taters this year while batting .336. He adds 23 doubles, along with 77 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in batting!
 
Monday 8/28/1888: Tip O'neill out for 7 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N) is without its right-hander Tip O'neill for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bill Krieg in a game against Boston (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. New York (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that O'neill had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament. Tip has a record of 15-11 this season, with an ERA of 4.06. In 261.2 Innings he was able to strike out 90 batters. He has 10 complete games and one shutout.
 
Monday 8/28/1888: New York (N)'s Ramsey wins Player of the Week award

Pete Browning from Louisville wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Pete pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .591 with 0 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .773. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 12 game hitting streak right now. His season features a batting average of .320 (147 hits in 460 AB), 47 doubles, 3 triples and one bomb. Browning collected 52 RBI and 67 runs as well. He's 7th in the American League in batting! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Dick Conway, one of St. Louis (N)'s best starting pitchers. Conway was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Monday 8/14/1888: Player of the Week honors go to Hecker and Muldoon
Philadelphia (A)'s pitcher Guy Hecker had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Guy went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 6 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Boston (N)'s Mike Muldoon this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Muldoon helped his team with an average of .500 and 5 RBI in 26 at bats.
 
Thursday 8/10/1888: Tom Burns ropes four hits, completes cycle
CINCINNATI - Tom Burns led Brooklyn to a 9-6 win over Cincinnati by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A 394 foot drive to left field marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Al Mays in the 1st inning. A single in the 3rd off Al Mays accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit was a double off Al Mays in the 5th inning. Hit number 4 followed in the 8th inning, a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Tom did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .266. He's now the 4th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Sam Wise was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/5/1887.
 
Tuesday 8/8/1888: Guy Hecker turns in great performance against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY - Guy Hecker took the mound and never left. And Kansas City hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 115 games started. Hecker (7-2) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 57 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Philadelphia (A)'s second baseman Ed Rowen got 2 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hecker. The final score of the game was 9-0.
 
Monday 8/7/1888: Washington's Burke wins Player of the Week award
Washington's pitcher James Burke had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. James went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 12 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. James has a record of 14-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.24. It's the 9th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Washington's pitcher James Burke. He went 6-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 1.57. He struck out 38 in 63 innings. James got two complete game shutouts as well! In 17 starts this year James struck out 94 batters in 147.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.32, his record 13-2. James has pitched 2 shutouts and 14 complete games. Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher Charlie Getzien is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. He struck out 38 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 7-0 while pitching 38 innings. His ERA in July was 1.86. Charlie also fired a shutout. This season Getzien compiled an ERA of 1.93, going 16-9 in 27 starts. He fanned 141 while giving up 193 hits in 237.1 innings. He has 25 complete games and 4 shutouts. Sunday 7/30/1888: Jim Handiboe out for 5-6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's ace Jim Handiboe suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 1st of the game against New York (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Back Muscle. His ERA of 2.38 helped him to a 12-9 record this year. He struck out 157 and walked 50 in 185.1 innings.
 
Friday 7/28/1888: Indianapolis' John Reilly mashes five hits
BALTIMORE - John Reilly punished Baltimore's pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Indianapolis, they won the game 11 to 2. Hit number 2 followed in the 3rd inning, a RBI triple. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Frank Devin. In the 7th inning he unloaded a RBI triple off Frank Devin. A pitch from Sparrow Morton in the 8th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. He had a single in the 1st, driving in one run. John scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .292.
 
Monday 7/24/1888: Cleveland's Cattanach severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its right-hander John Cattanach for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Billy Reid in a game against Baltimore. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Cattanach compiled an ERA of 3.99, going 10-11 in 25 starts. He fanned 139 while giving up 169 hits in 207.2 innings. He has 13 complete games and one shutout.
 
Monday 7/24/1888: Brouthers and Meegan win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Washington's Dan Brouthers this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Dan pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .480 with 1 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .720. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Pete Meegan of Chicago (N) wins his 5th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Meegan was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Sunday 7/23/1888: Larry Mckeon dominates Cincinnati, gives up just 2 hits
BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's right-hander Larry Mckeon didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Cincinnati, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Mckeon (19-6) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 55 of 94 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Brooklyn's third baseman Joe Sommer got 1 hit in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Mckeon. The final score of the game was 6-0.

It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Louisville's pitcher Ed Daily. Daily was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. PHILADELPHIA (N) - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia (N)'s right-hander Hardie Henderson will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston (N) where he left the field in the 7th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 2.21 helped him to a 14-6 record this year. He struck out 121 and walked 34 in 195.2 innings. He has 17 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!
 
Monday 7/10/1888: Detroit's Wood severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit's George Wood suffered a serious injury Monday in a game against Kansas City . Wood fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Back Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .313 AVG, 100 hits, 23 doubles, 5 triples and 4 taters, along with 50 RBI and 52 runs scored. He's 9th in the American League in batting and 8th in RBI!
 
Monday 7/10/1888: Philadelphia (N)'s Griffin wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Curt Welch, Baltimore's starting centerfielder. In 18 at bats he hit .500 with 0 HR and 5 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 11 game hitting streak right now. Sandy Griffin from Philadelphia (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .500 with 4 RBI and slugged .750 in 16 at bats. Wednesday 6/21/1888: Frank Meinke fires 1-hitter against St. Louis (N)
ST. LOUIS (N) - Frank Meinke had some fun again. St. Louis (N) hitters did not. Brooklyn's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 149 games started. Meinke (10-8) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 56 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Tuesday 6/20/1888: Indianapolis' Voss out for 9 weeks
INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis is without its right-hander Alex Voss for at least 9 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Tom Brown in a game against Philadelphia (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Bicep Muscle. CINCINNATI - Al Mays had some fun again. REAL fun. Chicago (N) hitters did not. Cincinnati's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 1 career shutouts in 19 games started. Mays (3-9) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 59 of 102 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' The hitting star for Cincinnati was centerfielder Mike Griffin, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. Cincinnati improved its record to 19-43, scoring 2 runs on 7 hits.

Martin Powell wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .450 with 6 RBI and slugged .950 in 20 at bats. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander John Ryan will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Chicago (N) on Monday. New York (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Ryan had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. His ERA of 2.55 helped him to a 6-3 record this year. PHILADELPHIA (N) - Hardie Henderson took the mound and never left. And Cincinnati hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 169 games started. Henderson (9-3) fanned 1 and walked 2, throwing 125 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Perry Werden suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' New York (N)'s rightfielder George Van haltren collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Ramsey. WASHINGTON - Washington's ace James Burke suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander John Cattanach is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Kansas City found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Cattanach 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Cattanach (2-1) fanned 8 and walked 2, throwing 118 pitches. Pete Hotaling provided Cleveland with the offense Cattanach needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 2-0.
